Drama

*BAXTER – LTBX & SUBTITLED FRANCE– Totally twisted tale of the dog who thinks. He doesn’t understand the backward ways of humans and thinks we should all be killed. He becomes the pet of a child Nazi and starts a sadomasochistic and fulfilling relationship, until another dog enters the fray. An amazing and dark movie. This is not a cute animal comedy, so approach with caution. (A)

*BEYOND THE DOORS aka DOWN ON US (1983) - Larry Buchanan directed this totally berserk conspiracy tale about a secret section of the CIA who set about assassinating Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. The movie includes TONS of footage of these actors badly performing songs that sound almost like the bands they represent, but not quite enough that Larry could get sued. Also his portrayal of this icons is hilarious as Janis is a frustrated dyke who will do anything for love, Jimi is just init for the tunes and Jim Is the radical revolutionary sex god who is so intense he has to be dubbed by someone else! This is the epic of badness from a filmmaker who made a career of it. No conspiracy collection is complete without this! (B)

*THE BRAVE (1998)- LTBX - Johnny Depp's directorial debut is still unavailable here in the States. He plays an American Indian man who in a last ditch effort to take care of his family, donates himself to be killed in a snuff film. The movie chronicles his last few days leading up to the event. Gritty and well done. The screenwriter killed his wife and himself in real life! (B+)

*BROTHER - LTBX, UNCUT, SUBTITLED (mostly in English spoken though) - Beat Takishi's first English Language film was censored heavily upon release in the USA. It was even censored digitally, to remove splashing blood during the gunfight scenes! This is the uncut version with all the gory mob rub-outs and seppuku that was missing before! And in great friggin quality to boot! (A+)

THE BRUTE - Subtitled print of Luis Bunnel's classic tale of life in the lower end. Reminds me of my childhood......(A)

CHARLOTTE (197?) - Roger Vadim directed this sleaze hiding as art flick that is a meditation on violence, sex, snuff films and necrophilia. Socially redeemable? You be the judge! (B+)

*CODE OF THE HUNT – AKA COTA DE COZA SPAIN– Jorg Grau film about a home invasion situation that haunts for years. This is one of the most disturbing films of its type approach with caution. (B-)

*CONFESSIONS OF A BLUE MOVIE STAR- Hilariously faked documentary about the smut industry from the seventies. Full of hot naked babes, and wonderful dubbing for the American market as well as out of context interview clips with Roman Polanksi taking about snuff movies! Be sure to stick around after the credits for the "Snuff" filmmaker interview. He is the guy in the paper bag mask showing clips of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT! Click HERE for a review of this movie. (B+)

CULT OF THE DAMNED aka ANGEL ANGEL DOWN WE GO (1969) - Very psychedelic hippy era musical freak-out has a Doors rip off musician by the name of Bogart Peter Stuyvesant helping out in a cherubic young ladies coming out party. Soon she is one of his slave like followers, he is stumping her Mother and sapping their riches. How far off can a ritual murder be? Also with Lou Rawls and Roddy Mcdowall! Includes trailer! (B-)

*ETOILE – LTBX - ITALY– Jennifer Connelly (My Goddess) stars in this tame but entertaining Italian ghost story directed by Peter Delmonte. More atmosphere than anything else but worth your time nonetheless, especially if you’re a fan of the divine young star. (A)

THE GLASS HOUSE (1972) - Gritty and ugly prison drama base don the Truman Capote short story has a college professor convicted of manslaughter (Allan Alda) entering prison on the same day as a new guard (Billy Dee Williams) and both of them ensnaring the wrath of prison badass Vic Morrow. Though not overtly graphic this movie set the precedents of realism that would be touched upon in series like OZ or films like SHORT EYES. This is a powerhouse film waiting to be rediscovered. (A-)

GHOSTS OF THE CIVIL DEAD – Very gritty prison drama that unveils how prison life has been bought out by the private sector and stripped away the human rights of the prisoners and guards alike. This is a pressure cooker of a film that is both compassionate and frightening, Watch for Nick Cave as the loose cannon psychopath who is dropped into the prison to cause a riot. Click HERE for a review of this movie. (C+)

HEART OF JUSTICE –MADE FOR TV- Sexy and highly charged noir thriller made for turner cable TV. The real reason to watch is Jennifer Connelly as the femme Fatale out to crush chump Eric Stoltz. Also with Dennis Hopper and Vincent Price (this was his last role). (C-)

*HIGHWAY PATROLMAN – Subtitled – Alex "Repo Man" Cox’s gritty drama of a the day to day life of a policeman in Mexico. Full of payoffs, drugs and sudden violence. (A+)

THE ISLE - Ltbx, Subtitled - incredible Korean thriller that is very disturbing. Very similar in tone to AUDITION. A man on the run rents a floating shack on a fishing lake run by a mute woman who has some real intimacy issues. The scenes involving swallowing and masturbating with fishhooks will make even the most jaded give up! A very fine film! (A-)

JOE – This Counter Culture classic about a bigot father searching San Francisco’s hippie and drug culture for his missing daughter. He eventually becomes more outrageous than the hippies. Remembered for Susan Sarrandon’s nudity, and a searing performance by Peter Boyle as JOE. (C)

JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN (1971) - One of the most devastating anti-war films ever made. Popularized in my generation by the clips used in the Metallica video ONE. A man comes back form the war a limbless, senseless trunk who, unfortunately can still feel everything. Fucking devastating in its directness. (B)

LEOLO – SUBTITLED, SPAIN – Very downbeat tale of a kid growing up and going crazy. He humps big pieces of meat, is in love with the hooker across the hall, wants to murder his grandfather and his friends are fond of raping cats. Try this one on a double feature with THE REFLECTING SKIN to remember that growing up really sucked. Depressing as hell, but a fine film. (A-)

THE NIGHT PORTER – LTBX, UNCUT GREAT BRITAIN – Sick fucking relationship drama about a Jewish woman who had a sadomasochistic relationship with a guard in the WW2 prison camp. Jump ahead twenty years and they both are part of integrated society and meet again. They hide in a hotel room and relive their past together. No gore but more psychological violence than most can stand. Brilliantly made, and disgusting as hell. Gotta 21 to order! (A+)

*POOR WHITE TRASH – Super popular sixties drive in cult sensation about battling bayou hillbillies lead by the esteemed Timothy Carrey! A true and cult classic! (A)

PRAY FOR THE WILDCATS – Anyone who grew up watching seventies sitcoms, will have their heads warped by this outrageous TV movie. William Shatner, Robert Reed (yes the Dad from The Brady Bunch) and, wait for it, Andy Griffith go on a backwoods America vacation only to discover that Andy is a hippie molesting Psychopath! Seeing the sheriff of Mayberry trying to get busy with an unwilling little hippie honey will fuck you up for life! SCARY! (A)

PUNISHMENT PARK (198?) - Really violent allegory regarding prisoners playing a game for their freedom. They are made to run a nearly impossible obstacle course while being hunted by sadistic guards. This movie predates the running man and many other of the Most Dangerous Game type thrillers we've seen in recent years. Hair-raising and thought provoking, this is a great film. (B)

*THE REFLECTING SKIN – Big budget, studio backed British film is a twisted slice of rural life. Told from the point of view of a child who realizes that life is fucked up and can make your crazy. With exploding frogs, Child-molesting Street gangs, mummified dead babies and the radiation scarred reflecting skin of the title. This is a haunting and debilitating film. (A+)

ROLLING THUNDER (now LTBX with TRAILER!) – Paul Schrader wrote this intense tale of a Vietnam veteran who comes home to find he can’t adjust, until robbers kill his family and his hand mutilated. Once his hand is replaced with a hook its revenge time. He finds himself right at home amidst the carnage. A lost seventies classic. (A)

*SALO: 120 DAYS OF SODOM – SUBTITLED, LTBX & UNCUT ITALY– Pier Paolo Pasolini’s blood and semen caked reworking of the tales of DeSade to fit Fascist Italy. Easily the most offensive movie ever made, and then some. But make no mistake; this is a fantastic film. You gotta be 21 to order! (A+)

SOUL HUSTLER aka THE DAY THE LORD GOT BUSTED (1976) - Former teen idol Fabian plays a traveling evangelist who is grifting folks right and left until his dirty deeds finally catch up to him. A gritty and sometimes thought provoking character study of guilt vs. greed that is well worth seeing today. (C)

SUTURE – B/W LTBX – Bizarre identity thriller. Tries to emulate Hitchcock a bit too much, but the creative cinematography and design elevate it to another level. Worth a look. (A+)

*THREADS – Well now that we are enemies with most of the world again this disturbing post nuke drama from Britain is all too relevant. This accented drama is essentially THE DAY AFTER, but tens times as disturbing and thoughtful. Unlike the American made for TV film, this holds nothing back and will haunt you for a long time. (A-)

THREE BY SCORSESE – Three short films; two documentaries and one short shock film, by the master. Italian American is a portrait of his parents. American Boy is a night of stories by TAXI DRIVER’S gun salesman Steven Prince. This one is especially entertaining in light of how the whole Adrenaline needle scene from PULP FICTION was stolen from this. The Big Shave is a man shaving his face off, apparently in protest of Vietnam. Well worth having. (A+)

THUMB TRIPPING - Bruce Dern stars in this counter culture road movie about hitchhiking from the early seventies. (B)

*TROUBLE EVERY DAY (2002) - LTBX - Really oddball drama about cannibalism as a metaphor for sexual lust. With some really disturbing scenes of a man being eaten alive during sex and a woman having her vagina chewed out. Stars Vincent Gallo and Beatrice Dalle. An arty, depression piece, not unlike Cronenberg's CRASH. (A-)

THE VALLEY – AKA OBSCURED BY CLOUDS - Yet another oh so cool Barbet Schroeder directed hippie existentialist drama about dopers who goes jungle. Once again with PINK FLOYD music. (C+)
